iRock Music Visit
8/05/2026 5:22 PM

Today, we really enjoyed a visit from iRock, who delivered a really engaging live music assembly on the benefits of playing in a rock band.

At this moment in time, the iRock band lessons are only open to our lower school children (FS, Year 1 and Year 2). I am excited about offering these extra-curricular music opportunities to our lower school pupils, to give them the opportunity for early musical experience outside of their school curriculum lessons.

Key Stage 2 children (Year 3, 4, 5 and 6) are welcome to participate in our already existing instrumental lessons (there is also a school band for instrumental players too). If your child has been inspired today, and is interested in learning an instrument in school (Keyboard or Guitar), please enquire with the school office for more information. Thank you.

Year 6 Leavers Hoodies
1/05/2026 12:24 PM

Dear parents and carers,

As a tradition in year 6, we would like to organise leavers hoodies for the children to purchase and wear for their final half term in school. They will be able to keep these as a memory of their time at Fairfields. The hoodies will be designed with the school logo on the front, and with the children's names from year 6 on the back. Only the children's first names will be used, unless we have two children with the same first name. In this situation, the child's first name and first letter of their surname will be used.

A parent of a child in year 6 has kindly offered to coordinate the hoodies being designed and ordered but before we send out further details, we need to check if you are happy for your child's name to be included on the hoodie. If you do not want your child's name on the hoodie, please can you inform the school office by Friday 8th May. After this date, we will get started on the hoodie design.

Many thanks

Mrs Vicky Hopkins

Missing books- URGENT
2/02/2026 9:17 PM

Dear parents/carers of Lima class,

Sadly, two further books have gone missing today from Lima's classroom. These are brand new books which belong to a child in the class. Please can you ensure that your child has not brought home any additional books which do not belong to them. The books which went missing today are titled “The catastrophic friendship fails of Lottie Brooks” and “The mega complicated crushes of Lottie Brooks”. We have spoken to the children about this issue previously and have reiterated to them the seriousness of taking someone else's belongings. I would appreciate it if you could also speak to your child about this issue so that we can stop this situation from continuing.

Kind regards

Mrs Vicky Hopkins

Year 6 mobile phone use
22/01/2026 9:48 PM
Dear parents and carers,
Smart phones and social media usage amongst children continues to generate significant media and political interest. I've previously communicated Fairfields approach to smart phones, in line with primary schools throughout Basingstoke, which will take effect from this September.
Unfortunately, I am regularly receiving concerns from parents/carers relating to issues outside school on social media/messaging apps between children in year 6. Having received multiple concerns in the past several days, I felt compelled to write a heartfelt message from myself as a Headteacher to ask for your support.
It saddens me that children are being impacted by this issue, and that I have very little control over it. I can help educate children about the safe use of the internet, and we do that constantly in school through assemblies, computing lessons, PSHE lessons, whole school half termly e-safety work, safeguarding projects throughout the year and in responding to issues when they arise.
However, it is outside of my control that some children have access to mobile phones, access to apps (some of which are not appropriate for their age), how often they use these phones and apps, how they are monitored and what restrictions are on them. This is the responsibility of parents/carers.
Having a son in year 6 myself, I do fully understand the pressures of children wanting to have a smart phone and access to social media/apps. Like you, I have had many a tricky conversation in my own house about it. It is something we did not have to navigate in our own childhood (if you are as old as me!) and there is no 'handbook' for guidance.
However, I strongly feel that as parents, working together is the only way forward to protect our children. The pressures on parents come because 'everyone has a mobile' and 'everyone has the app'. If parents can work together to stop children in year 6 using WhatsApp (which is for children of 13 years +), we would not need to battle the pressure which is upon us.
Technology continues to provide us with new ways to connect, but with all these issues which are impacting children, I question whether WhatsApp and other similar social networking sites/apps are the right way to be connecting our children right now. Even if you feel that your child has the emotional maturity to use these sites safely themselves, this does not stop what other people can expose your child to.
As parents, we all must make decisions on what we consider are in the best interests of our children. I would strongly encourage you all to consider removing WhatsApp from your child's phone, or at the very least, your child being part of WhatsApp groups. Please talk to each other as parents about other ways to connect your children which are safer. You have the ability within your child's smart phone to restrict functionality and access to websites and apps. Please monitor what your child can access, and when they can access their device.
Thank you for your support and I hope my email is taken with the good intent it is written in. I desperately want to ensure, as I know you do, that your children are happy and enjoying childhood without these additional pressures to navigate when they are not ready.
Kind regards
Mrs Vicky Hopkins
